Make a gift to mark an important milestone, celebrate a special occasion, or remember a loved one.

Gifts of property, such as publicly held stock, that have appreciated in value and have been owned for at least one year, can be a highly effective way of giving. A gift of stock to the Alliance for a Living Ocean qualifies for a charitable tax deduction on the full appreciated value of the stock at the time of the gift, while escaping the capital gains tax on the appreciation. Donors aged 70 ½ and older are able to transfer up to $100,000 a year directly to a qualified charity, free of federal income tax. The IRA Charitable Rollover is not included in the donor’s adjusted gross income and counts towards the taxpayer’s required minimum distribution for the year. To count for the calendar year, this transfer must be completed by December 31. To make an IRA charitable roll-over gift in support of the ALO, contact your IRA plan administrator.

A bequest to ALO through your will or estate plan is one way you can help safeguard our shores for future generations. You can choose to designate that a bequest is to be used for a general or specific purpose. Bequests are exempt from federal estate taxes. If you have a taxable estate, the estate tax charitable deduction may offset or eliminate estate taxes, resulting in a larger inheritance for your heirs.

Types of Bequests

You can make a bequest to ALO in many ways:

• Specific Bequest: Making a gift to ALO of a specific asset (like a car, property, real estate) or a dollar amount

• Percentage Bequest: Leaving a specific percentage of your overall estate to charity to ALO

• Residuary Bequest: A gift of what remains in the estate after the will or trust has given away each of the specific bequests. A common residuary bequest involves leaving a percentage of the residue of the estate to charity.

• Contingent Bequest: A gift that is contingent on the occurrence of a condition you designate in your estate plan.

The below language examples can be helpful if you are considering a bequest to ALO. You may wish to provide this suggested language to your attorney when creating or updating your estate plan.

Specific Bequest

I hereby give, devise and bequeath (description of dollar amount or asset) to Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO), a nonprofit organization located at P.O. Box 2250, Long Beach Township, NJ 08008, Federal Tax ID #222864028, for ALO’s general use and purpose.

Percentage Bequest

I hereby give, devise and bequeath ____ percent (___%) of my total estate, determined as of the date of my death, to Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO), a nonprofit organization located at P.O. Box 2250, Long Beach Township, NJ 08008, Federal Tax ID #222864028, for ALO’s general use and purpose.

Residuary Bequest

I hereby give, devise and bequeath to Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO), a nonprofit organization located at P.O. Box 2250, Long Beach Township, NJ 08008, Federal Tax ID #222864028, (ALL OR A PERCENTAGE) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to be used for ALO’s general use and purpose.

Contingent Bequest

If (primary beneficiary) does not survive me, then I hereby give, devise and bequeath to Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO), a nonprofit organization located at P.O. Box 2250, Long Beach Township, NJ 08008, Federal Tax ID #222864028, (DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY) to be used for ALO’s general use and purpose.

Restricted Bequests

If you are considering a bequest but would like to ensure that it will be used for a specific purpose, please contact us at info@alolbi.org and let us know. We would be delighted to work with you and your attorney to help you identify ways to give and meet your charitable objectives. We will also work with you and your attorney to craft language to accomplish your goals.

If you are making a restricted bequest, we recommend that your attorney include the following provision to give ALO flexibility should it no longer be possible for ALO to use your gift as you originally intended:

If, in the judgment of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO), it shall become impossible for ALO to use this bequest to accomplish the specific purposes of this bequest, ALO may use the income and principal of this gift for such purpose or purposes as the Board determines is most closely related to the restricted purpose of my bequest.
