At Alliance for a Living Ocean –

We work to make a positive environmental impact by taking action on important issues affecting the community through outreach and partnerships

Transition Away From Fossil Fuels

At Alliance for a Living Ocean, we champion every step towards living a life with less plastic. From hosting beach clean ups to educating on the harmful effects of plastic pollution in our oceans, our mission is to safeguard our shores for future generations.

We educate the community on plastic pollution and its effects on our shores through our partnerships with like-minded organizations on Long Beach Island, community outreach and programming. We encourage the community to learn more about LBI’s native ecosystems with our weekly Critter Roundup programming.

We host local Beach Clean-ups for groups, partner with other ocean conservation organizations and encourage individuals to do their own clean ups to keep our beaches free from plastic pollution.

At ALO, we believe we must act now to slow climate change. Plastic pollution and climate change threaten the future of our local, coastal ecosystems and communities. In alignment with our value to protect people and the planet, Alliance for a Living Ocean supports a transition away from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are by far the largest contributor to global climate change (source: UN.org). As New Jersey and the world transitions away from a reliance on fossil fuels, we understand renewable energy solutions are not without environmental impact. There is no perfect solution to supply energy demand. To safeguard our shores we must act with progress in mind.

At ALO, we support the transition to cleaner energy solutions as a path forward in the fight against climate change and plastic pollution.

Whale Deaths and Data Driven Solutions

As an organization founded at the Jersey Shore and a long-standing member of the Long Beach Island community, we are devastated by this spate of whale deaths. Part of our core programming is to educate and engage our community on LBI’s native ecosystems, including the diverse marine life. Along with the community, we’re heartbroken by these recent events.

Alliance for a Living Ocean supports the work of fellow New Jersey shore nonprofits Marine Mammal Stranding Center and Atlantic Marine Conservation Society on determining the cause of the whale deaths. We support data-driven solutions and following the science, and look to these trusted organizations in their ongoing investigations and for a path toward preventing future whale deaths along our shores.

Mitigating Litter in Surf City

Surf City is a beautiful and unique part of Long Beach Island. We believe it is critical to respect this town and its beaches by keeping it clean.

Beach litter in Surf City has been well documented by various stakeholders, both on social media and at borough council meetings. At beach sweeps, ALO volunteers collect significant amounts of trash on the beaches of Surf City.

The issue of beach litter is not one that will be solved overnight or resolved by a single solution. It will require a comprehensive approach that involves direct cooperation between residents, visitors and government officials.

Check out our report which outlines a plan developed by ALO to reduce the amount of litter on beaches to ensure that everyone can enjoy a clean and healthy Surf City.
