Safeguarding Our Shores for Future Generations
Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO) is dedicated to clean water and a healthy coastal ecosystem for Long Beach Island and its surrounding communities. We inspire action through education, conservation, and community engagement.
Who We Are
ALO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1987 to safeguard the waters of Long Beach Island and Barnegat Bay. We believe that a clean ocean and bay are essential to our health, local economy, and future. Through hands-on programs, advocacy, and partnerships, we work to protect and preserve our unique coastal environment.
What We Do
-
Preserving the Island
We’re committed to keeping LBI clean and resilient through hands-on efforts like beach cleanups and dune grass planting. By restoring and protecting these natural spaces, we help maintain the beauty and biodiversity of our island.
-
Education and Outreach
We connect people of all ages to the environment through interactive programs like our Critter Round-Ups and school partnerships. By fostering curiosity and stewardship, we inspire the next generation of ocean advocates.
-
Community Events
Our signature event, the ALO Longboard Classic brings the community together each summer to celebrate surf, sustainability, and tradition. We also host free events like beach cleanups and dune grass plantings that invite everyone to help protect our island.
-
Working With our Partners
Collaboration is at the heart of our mission. We work alongside local organizations, schools, and environmental groups to amplify our impact and bring meaningful, sustainable solutions to our entire coastal community.
